No arrests in reported night hunt

Two Oconee County men had to explain themselves Sunday after a passer-by thought they were poaching deer or hunting at night, which is illegal, according to a sheriff's report.

Turns out the men were just removing an injured deer and hadn't broken any laws.

The deputy responded about 10:25 p.m. to investigate two men loading a deer onto a pickup off Lavista Road north of Watkinsville.

However, when the deputy located the man who shot the deer, he explained that he and a companion were traveling on the road when the deer ran into the road and was hit by the truck.

The driver and his passenger got out of the pickup and walked into the field with a flashlight where they found the injured deer on the ground.

The man told the deputy he shot the deer once with a rifle.
